Halfway through Semester One

Image

Afternoon Lovelies,

I had an astonishing realization last Wednesday afternoon that I am being sucked into a black hole of procrastination, laziness, and flat out boringness.  When I am not checking Facebook or Twitter, I’m on YouTube, watching my favorite Tubers or watching a band perform.  I did manage to talk myself into deleting the Instagram off my iPod a few days ago.  It extremely bothers me how much I have this “need” to be connected to the internet.  Whenever I open my laptop, I automatically check my now two social networks, followed by Pinterest, my school email, D2L, my blog, and lastly my personal email, even though no one except Facebook and my BFF, spam, emails me.  It’s all completely pointless checking everything seven times a day that I’ve decided to develop a plan to rid myself of my internet obsession.  I’m still working out the kinks, but hopefully it’ll work.

As I said with my first sentence, being a lazy, boring, procrastinator completely describes my week up to Sunday, where I actually got ahead of most of my homework.  Yay me.  I’ve spent most of my week on the internet in my dorm room sprawled on my most glorious futon.  I had a few exams this week, one I did very well and the other I ended up failing, but it shouldn’t mess my grade up too much.  I’m not worried.  Frankly, it feels like I’ve stopped caring to a point adding to my laziness trait that grows every day.

I believe I told you about my “Monthly Book Read” deal.  I finished my October book on Friday.  It was titled The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. It’s filled with magic, circus, and details.  The author does an excellent job in describing what she’s seeing in her own head and what she’s seeing in her head is particularly crazy.  I can’t describe what is in the book, read it for yourself if you chose, it’s amazing.  An extra week with nothing to read is proving to be quite difficult to the point where I might have to make my monthly book read into the Monthly Double.  We’ll see how November goes.  Any suggestions for what books to get next?

Last Wednesday, I finally changed my major to Media Studies with an emphasis in Journalism.  Because I have a lot of my gen-eds covered and with the strong possibility of studying abroad my junior year (2014-2015), I’ll be taking a bunch of major focused classes next semester, which I’m extremely excited about.  I’ll see how I like them and go from there!  I ended up having to walk up six flights of stairs to get a signature and as you can probably guess, I’m out of shape.  Frankly, I’m quite embarrassed to say I actually had to take a break on floor four.  One of my friends started going to the gym so hopefully he’ll drag my lazy ass with him one day.  Haha.

Saturday, we went to our Homecoming football game against River Falls.  We creamed them 31-0, which made for a long boring game, but I had to keep telling myself I need to get some fresh air and out of that dorm.

That night, a few of my friends and I went to the Lighting of the M.  Fun fact:  Platteville’s home to the largest M in the world!  They ended up lighting the outside of it and then set fireworks off on top of the hill.  It wasn’t just UWP students there though, there were people from the community too, mixed in, with their children and hearing those little darlings shout at the fireworks for being so amazing was more wonderful than the fireworks themselves.  Can you tell I miss tutoring my preschool class?  Haha.  After the M, we made a Walmart trip and headed back to the dorm basement to play Bananagrams.  It’s a game like Scrabble only different for those who don’t know.  It was a delightful evening.

On Monday, we had a lovely thunderstorm.  Thunder, lightning, the whole shebang all at ten in the morning.  It felt so glorious walking in the rain despite the fact that my jeans were soaked before making it halfway to class.  My hair frizzed, my Converse squeaked when I walked, and yet I had the biggest smile on my face.  I enjoy the rain when it’s not thirty three degrees out.

I did something marvelous on Monday.  Some student had his calorie loaded burger and fries slapped on his tray in line ahead of me to swipe our lovely ID cards.  The lovely old woman at the register swiped his card and told him she couldn’t accept his card because his meal plan didn’t work at the certain time.  The poor kid looked at his greasy food and back up to the woman.  “What do I do?”  The old lady sympathetically told him to just leave it there.  That’s when the wind blew through an open window, revealing my dark red cape with the words “Captain Awesome” written on it and I shot out my arm.  “You can use my card, sir.”  The kid looked from his slain cow on a bun up to me.  “Thanks.”  The wonderful old woman thanked me about four times as well, which made me feel even better about myself despite the fact that I just paid for some mustard slathered beef with a side of heart attack.  I did my good deed.  I deserve a pin for my cape!

Anyways…This week is looking surprisingly easy with only a lab project on Thursday.  This weekend I plan on going to Eau Claire for my and my boyfriend’s anniversary, which I’m quite excited about(: This week’s going to go fast so I’ll make sure I’ll enjoy it.  I hope to goodness that you are all doing simply splendid.  Until next week, much love.

The Seventh Week As A College Kid

Aside

Watching a leaf tumble through the air was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever seen in my grandma’s forest this past weekend.  I’ve begun to notice and appreciate the little things a whole lot more since I moved down to Platteville.  I don’t look down so much when I walk, instead looking ahead and around to take in everything surrounding me.  The world’s so beautiful and I can’t believe I had been taking that for granted for so long.

This past week has been lovely.  I presented a speech about palm reading on Wednesday.  It was pretty great seeing all my classmates hold their palm two inches from their face seeing if what I said was true for them.  I had my first legit Spanish exam on Thursday, which I aced.  So BOOYA!

Wednesday night, I ended up going to a piano concert with my friend and a couple other people we know.  The theater was full of mostly elderly people-men with their grey hair balding and women with their tightly curled hair.  Mostly all the elderly were with their spouse, which I thought was the cutest thing ever.  When I get old, that’s where I want to be on a Wednesday night.  Either there or at some fancy art gallery where there’s free food critiquing different pieces as if I could do better.

My dad, grandma, and sister came to pick me up Thursday night.  My grandma loved the experience of seeing campus and my dorm room despite the long drive.  My family has this new tradition of stopping at the Sparta Family Restaurant at some point of the long journey to bring me home.  It’s cheap, quick, and delicious.  Reminds me of my hometown diner only with tons more people.  After we had eaten, we got back on the road again, only to get a flat tire a half hour later.  It was dark and it was cold, but eventually we managed to get it switched out using a cell phone as a flash light.  We were home later than expected, but we made it.  That’s the only thing that matters.

I had a wonderful weekend home, being extremely busy the three days there.  Friday I went to Eau Claire after stopping in at my old workplace to see some of my coworkers.  I’m impressed with some of the clothes they now have.  They’re actually cute!  I received a couple hugs from a few of my coworkers and some harassment from my old boss.  It made me laugh.  Felt like I had never left.  My boyfriend showed me around Eau Claire’s campus and even though I totally think Platteville’s better…EC’s pretty nice.  I’ll give him that. (;  One of my high school friends goes to EC as well and we met up with him.  He taught me how to long board, which was a pretty amazing experience.  Riding around a parking lot was such a lovely way to pass some time.

I spent Saturday with my family at my grandma’s cabin on her back 40.  We celebrated my sister’s and grandma’s birthday with tons of food and a squirrel hunt.  Despite the rain, we had a pretty great time.  It was amazing to see all my family.

Once I returned to the great city of Platteville, it felt like I had never left.  My roommate got back a little later than I did and soon a couple of our friends came over.  We spent the night together listening to different country songs, laughing at the dirty parts and staring at the floor and seriously thinking about the meaning of some of the sadder songs.  It was great. Classes this week are going to be hard as I have two exams and one quiz.  I have the motivation of an old fat man considering taking up marathon running to do absolutely anything.  It’s pretty sad actually, but I think it’s just because I had such a lovely homework free weekend that I don’t want to go back to being a studious college kid.  I need a nap.

I hope your week was just as busy as mine was.  Lots of love.

Six Weeks Into Freshman Year

Image

Hello(:

Sorry this one’s coming a little later than usual.  I actually forgot about it until a couple hours ago.  So hello!  I’ll be heading home this Thursday night, which I’m super excited about!  My weekend’s booked with seeing different people and doing different activities.  It’ll definitely go by fast.  Feels like just last week i was going home for Homecoming.  That was almost three weeks ago.  Time flies when you’re having fun!

This past week has been quite interesting.  I’ve had one midterm already.  Another one will be on Thursday and the rest will be in the next two weeks.  I honestly love how spread out they are.  Classes are going well.  I have a few projects I have to get started on, but college is for procrastination and learning from your mistakes…one day I’ll stop procrastinating.  One day.  Until then…I’ll do them tomorrow.  Maybe.

I attended a Study Abroad Fair last Thursday, which was extremely inspiring.  I have this strong desire to study abroad next year.  Probably the spring of 2013.  In London.  That’s my dream.  I’m super excited.  The students I talked to about studying abroad were so passionate about the whole ordeal.  They couldn’t even explain how amazing the experiences were.  They all simply kept repeating: “Just go.”  Hopefully I will do just that!

Friday night was spent at a party at some frat house with my friends.  It was pretty entertaining.  The best part was when NSYNC’s “I want it that way” came on and everyone sang with it.  Oh boybands of the 90’s, you were great.  For a short while.  Very short.

Saturday, I ended up going to a couple lacrosse games to watch two of my friends play.  It was very chilly and windy so I got to put my new winter jacket to good use.  They ended up tying both games, which was satisfactory for them.  So yay!  One of my friends pulled out his pipe halfway through the game and as the wind blew across the field, you’d see each of the players turn to see where the smell of tobacco smoke was coming from.  It was pretty amusing. It was a really cool experience since it was my first lacrosse game.  We learned a lot.

Sunday was spent doing homework for pretty much everyone except my roommate, who took a four hour nap after breakfast at noon.  I ended up getting a little accomplished.  Not as much as I should’ve, but it worked.  Monday night, my roommate made us all cookies in the basement.  We took turns playing ping pong and bounced a balloon around while they baked.  My friend was actually the one bouncing around after the balloon until I told him he looked like a crazy playful cat.  He went and pouted in the corner with the balloon tucked under his arms.  One of my other friends then snuck up behind him with a pen in hand and popped the balloon right in the other guy’s face.  He jumped so bad!  The rest of us just snickered at him. The cookies were delicious and it was a lovely time spent together.  I spent today working on my speech that I’ve had two weeks to do for tomorrow.  It’ll be interesting how well it goes.  It’ll be decent, which is what I’m always shooting for now.

As the weather gets colder here, this place is feeling more like home.  After every day, it feels like I’ve been here an extra week.  Seriously, it’s going by so fast and it feels like forever since high school.

I’ve decided that I need to do more reading.  Reading makes you a better writer and it’s just something that I’ve always wanted to be doing.  Even when I’m old, I wanna be reading.  I have this dream of having this huge wall bookcase in the living room filled with books and books, some dusty, but most still good as new.  I just need to stock up on some books!

That’s all for this week I believe.  I’m becoming more aware of who I want to become.  Very very VERY slowly, but surely.  One day it’ll be clear.  Until then, here I am, figuring it out, one day at a time.  I hope your past week has been as busy and exciting as mine.  I’ll see some of you this coming weekend so yayy!  Miss you all so much.

Strive for Five Weeks

Image

The squirrels here are the fattest, slowest squirrels I have every seen in my life.  They have little hints of orange in their brown fur, highlighted by the sun, with the biggest, beadiest eyes you could fit on a fat squirrel head.  They actually are quite cute and every time I see one, I’m tempted to either A. Sit down on the closest bench and just watch the heavy animal climb up a tree with its belly hanging down or B. Try to catch it.  I could totally outrun those tubby creatures.  Usually I end up just hiding my smile, thinking of the latter, pressing play on the latest folk album I bought on iTunes.  I’m down to twenty dollars in my iTunes account…Two more albums I can buy.  Only two!!

Fall has arrived in Platteville full-forced.  The campus looks so beautiful with the weather being so lovely, it’s hard to be inside typing this and studying.  I want to be outside walking on the multiple nature trails next to the creek and exploring the trails students have made in the woods to caves and bluffs and forgotten bridges.  This past Sunday, that’s what some of my friends and I did.  My friend made a little treasure map to this cave he had found a few weeks ago for us to find ourselves—an adventure to keep his roommate out of the room for a bit.  We crossed meadows, barbed wire, and an old train bridge that we had to watch our steps for all the gaps.  It was quite an adventure and my friend thanked us greatly for keeping his roommate out of his hair for a few hours.

Saturday was spent at a football game against Whitewater, our rival and who is ranked like 4th in the nation or something.  They were supposed to be really good so the bleachers were pretty full.  We ended up losing at the very end by one point, which was slightly disappointing since there would be no parties that night.  It was also a good thing since I got to spend my Saturday night in my dorm cozied up on my futon watching countless hours of YouTube videos.  My roommate was hanging out with one of our friends so I was free to laugh as loud as I wanted and eat cracker after cracker without feeling any bit of remorse.

Classes have been going well, my Spanish quizzes drop lower each week because I forget about the stupid accents.  Oh the Spanish language.  I completely ACED my first biology exam, which I’m very proud of so I’d thought I’d bring it up(; This week is packed with papers and speeches that need writing, as well as a very big music appreciation and Spanish exam that needs studying for.  Busy week and busy weekend coming up.  It’s our last weekend before fall break and we are going out!  It’ll be great.

As busy as this past week was, I don’t have very much to talk about.  If it’s as beautiful wherever you’re at as it is here, I suggest you get out and enjoy the lovely fall colors before it’s too late.  Have a fabulous week(:
